Proposed Public Works Maintenance Center

Recently we all received a notice from Snohomish County Public Works concerning a public meeting to discuss a proposed Maintenance Center for the county. Steve Moller attended the meeting which was held on June 22 at the Horseshoe Grange Hall.

During the meeting, Public Works staff briefed the citizens in attendance on the project. Public Works proposes to consolidate two of the three road maintenance facilities to the property owned by the county at Cathcart. For the county this will improve their operations by:
  • Replacing two 60 to 70 year old facilities
  • Consolidate operations and maintenance to one site
  • Improve efficiency of operations
  • Use county owned property as opposed to leased property
The combined Maintenance Center would serve the Road Maintenance division, Fleet Management division and other Public Works divisions. The Center will include:
  • Equipment maintenance shops
  • Parking for vehicles and heavy equipment
  • Staff offices
  • Outdoor material storage yards
  • A soils laboratory
  • Traffic signal maintenance shop
  • Public Works records storage
  • Two new access points on Cathcart Way
  • Sheriff’s Office indoor firing range/training facility
  • Sheriff’s Office vehicle impound yard
There is room for the potential relocation of the Sheriff’s Office’s South Precinct which currently is located in Mill Creek on leased property. Also, Public Works is looking into possibly making the current Temporary Transfer Station (TTS) a permanent facility. The TTS has been operating while two other Transfer Stations (that collect garbage for transport to an eastern Washington regional landfill) in Everett and Mountlake Terrace were being renovated. The Cathcart TTS will close in September.

The facility will have 250 Public Works staff and will generate 750 vehicle trips, 5 days a week between 6:30am to 5:00PM.

The project timeline is:
Detailed design & construction documents: 2004-2005
Environmental review and conditional use permit: Fall 2004-2005 (before the county Hearing Examiner; can take 9 to 12 months)
Grading and building permits: Fall 2005
Construction: 2005-2007

For more information on this project call Steve Dickson, Assistant to the Director, Public Works, (425) 388-6442.

Car Theft

In May, a car was stolen in The Falls from a house along 141st St SE. While it was quickly recovered, this serves as a reminder that car theft and car prowls continue to be a major problem in Snohomish County.

Remember:
  • Lock your car
  • Do not leave anything inside your car, especially your garage door opener
